The North American Strawberry Growers
Association (NASGA) was formed in 1978 to establish a coordinated
effort to develop, collect and disseminate information on
strawberry production and marketing to North American growers
and small fruit research workers. The membership, executive,
marketing, legislative, and research committees are composed
of fruit growers, nurserymen and professional researchers.
The North American Strawberry Growers Association
encourages and supports strawberry research. Some of the
areas currently being funded include: breeding and genetics
of new varieties, insect pest management, cultural practices,
disease resistance, marketing and new market opportunities,
epidemiology of diseases, weed control, and the list continues
to grow. The research committee evaluates and funds research
on an annual basis. Approximately 25 percent of NASGA's
operating budget is devoted to research; an impressive figure
and one that university and federal research departments
take into consideration when deciding which small fruit
projects to support. Studies are being funded by NASGA at
many universities in the U.S. and Canada and in provincial,
state and federal agencies.
