Strawberry Production
Guide
For the Northeast, Midwest, and Eastern Canada
The Strawberry Production Guide was written
by 16 experts representing eight universities. Dr. Marvin
Pritts, Horticulturist from Cornell University, and David
Handley, Extension Horticulturist from the University of Maine,
were the technical editors.
Published by the Northeast Regional Agricultural
Engineering Services (now known as the Natural Resource, Agricultural,
and Engineering Service) it was reviewed by growers, industry
leaders, researchers, extension professionals, and others.
It is intended as a comprehensive resource for both novice
and experienced strawberry growers in northeastern North America.
The 14 chapters cover everything from the history and biology
of the cultivated strawberry to planting and managing the
conditions under which the berry is grown. Pests and weeds
are addressed, as are the harvesting, packaging and marketing
of the final product.
Supplementing the text are 37 figures, 47 tables,
and 115 full-color photographs. Many of these photos will
help in the identification of pests, diseases and disorders.
The guide also features two appendixes: one to help growers
diagnose common strawberry pests and problems, and the other
as a guide to the ripening season for strawberries across
the United States. To assist with terminology a glossary is
included.
Finally, as an adjunct to the chapter on budgeting,
each guide includes computer diskettes containing spreadsheets
created in Microsoft Excel in both MAC and PC formats. They
will allow the user to automatically calculate total costs
and profits based on actual costs or projections.
This publication was awarded a blue ribbon by
the American Society of Association Executives in their Educational
Aids Competition.
